NOSFERATU

A SYMPHONY OF HORROR

Chefs FRIPP & Anthime Miller

Nosferatu (1922), directed by F.W. Murnau, is a landmark in the history of cinema and one of the most influential horror films ever made. The story is a loose, unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, though the names and certain plot elements were altered to avoid copyright issues.

Set in 1838, the film follows the young and naive real estate agent, Hutter, who travels to the remote Carpathian Mountains to assist Count Orlok, an eccentric and reclusive nobleman, with a property transaction. Upon arriving at Orlok's sinister castle, Hutter becomes increasingly uneasy as he discovers the true nature of his employer. Orlok, a creature with grotesque features, has sinister plans to travel to the city of Wisborg, where he intends to spread terror and death.

Hutter's wife, Ellen, becomes an unwitting key figure in Orlok's plan. As Orlok's dark influence spreads, Ellen, sensing that she is in peril, sacrifices herself in a desperate attempt to thwart his vampiric reign.

Notable for its expressionistic visuals, stark shadows, and groundbreaking use of practical effects, Nosferatu captures the eerie atmosphere of gothic horror. Max Schreck's portrayal of Count Orlok, with his insect-like movements and elongated features, remains one of the most iconic depictions of a vampire in cinematic history. The film's surreal, nightmarish imagery and its pioneering use of chiaroscuro continue to influence the genre and inspire filmmakers to this day.

Electronic musician Fripp and cellist/gambist Anthime Miller collaborated on a haunting, atmospheric score for Nosferatu in their 2024 performance for Resounding Silents. Through their dynamic combination of the contemporary and the ancient the film is given new life, and new horror. Electronic sounds vacillate and merge with the tone of strings and found instruments to create an atmosphere of timelessness. Through this setting Nosferatu rises again.
